Richard Armitage is the managing director of Richard Armitage Transport Consultancy Ltd., which he founded in 1990. He specialises in sustainable travel and community and accessible transport. He has been up to his neck in all forms of road-based passenger transport and travel for over 30 years.

Richard Armitage works with commercial, government, NHS and voluntary organisations, specialising in sustainable travel, including travel plans and car clubs, and in community and accessible transport. He served on the panel of consultants for the DfT funded Transport Energy programme of Site Specific Advice for Travel Plans (99-06).

Richard Armitage develops workplace or residential travel plans throughout the UK. In Ireland, in 2007, he prepared a car club feasibility assessment and business plan for Cork City Council. He is in the consortium led by ITP that has produced the DfT's Good Practice Guidance Making Car Sharing and Car Clubs Work (2004) and Making Personal Travel Planning Work (2007).

Richard Armitage has delivered new community transport organisations (e.g. Lambeth and Southwark CT and Compass CT in Sunderland), and worked closely with several others (e.g. Halton CT and RYECAT in Malton). He led an accessible transport review for Milton Keynes Council in 2005, with TAS Partnership, and then implemented the changes which resulted in MK PlusBus commencing operations in June 2006. This is operated by a social enterprise, owned jointly by Age Concern Milton Keynes and Ealing CT. MK Taxicard, a subsidised taxi system using smartcard technology, followed in 2007. He has developed CT Strategies in North Yorkshire, Cheshire and Northumberland. Richard Armitage was managing editor of Community Transport, the Community Transport Association's magazine, for 2004-05.

Richard Armitage served as a Trustee of Manchester Minibus Agency 1999 - 2004. He was founding General Secretary of the Community Transport Association, 1984-90. Richard Armitage was a founding director of, and remains an investor in, City Car Club Ltd. (previously Smart Moves Ltd.), which has pioneered car clubs in the UK. City Car Club cars serve Bath, Brighton & Hove, Bristol, Edinburgh, and London.

RATC has interests in urban regeneration, transport and the environment, publishing, and the organisation of specialist transport events (including consultation workshops, conferences, exhibitions and training seminars).
