The NHS pledges to cuts its carbon footprint

There is an NHS consultation underway about its Draft Carbon Reduction Strategy. In the “priorities for action” there are specific recommendations for how NHS Trusts should reduce carbon emissions from travel. In particular, it is proposed that

  • “All NHS organisations will be expected to produce and publish a Board approved Sustainable Travel Plan by 2009”.
  • “All NHS organisations should offer, and promote, at least a 20p per mile cycle mileage rate for staff”.
  • Consultation about the draft Carbon Reduction Strategy closed in September 2008. To find out more, contact the NHS Sustainable Development Unit.

Taxicard in Castle Morpeth

A pilot concessionary taxi scheme, Rural West Taxicard, has begun recruiting members and taxi drivers in rural parts of Castle Morpeth Borough. Rural West Taxicard will help people with mobility difficulties, or those without access to a car or public transport, to travel independently by providing them with some help towards meeting their taxi costs.

Set up under the auspices of Rural West Partnership, with funding from Advancing Castle Morpeth, the scheme has been organised by Richard Armitage Transport Consultancy, with Concessionary Solutions Ltd. providing the smartcard, readers and back office administration.

RATC Presentations to Planning Students

Kath Tierney made a presentation to Third Year Planning Students at the University of Manchester on 28th February 2008, covering examples of consultation techniques to promote community involvement in planning decisions.

Cheshire PlusBus article in Bus and Coach Buyer

Bus and Coach Buyer has recently published an article by Richard Armitage on the new Cheshire PlusBus service.

Launched in October 2007, PlusBus is a door-to-door minibus service for those who have mobility difficulties and cannot use public transport.

It is run by ECT Group (Ealing Community Transport) in partnership with Cheshire County Council, Chester City Council and Ellesmere Port & Neston Borough Council. In its first week, over 800 passenger trips were completed using just four minibuses.

GoCar for Cork
In 2007, Richard Armitage Transport Consultancy completed a feasibility study on car-sharing for Cork City Council (Republic of Ireland).
Cork City Council has now accepted an offer from Mendes GoCar Ltd, a company based in Ireland, to operate a pilot car-sharing scheme in Cork.

Making Personalised Travel Planning Work
Richard Armitage Transport Consultancy was part of the consortium led by Integrated Transport Planning Limited that has produced the Department for Transport’s research and case studies into best practice in household-based personalised travel planning techniques. The consortium included specialist advisors from Cleary Stevens Consulting and the Centre for Transport & Society at the University of West of England.

Cheshire County Council adopts new
Community Transport Strategy
At the end of 2007, Cheshire County Council announced that it has formally adopted a new Community Transport Strategy, which has been drafted and facilitated by Richard Armitage Transport Consultancy and TAS Partnership.
The Strategy aims is to ensure that the community transport sector in Cheshire can develop and grow to meet the needs of local people. It was prepared following extensive discussions during the summer with community transport operators, district councils, funders, and passengers.

The Low Floor, Low Carbon Minibus Project
Richard Armitage Transport Consultancy, with colleagues from Gfleet Services and TAS Partnership, is helping Sheffield Community Transport to explore the potential for taking the humble minibus to a new stage in its development: a reliable and affordable low-floor product, with appropriate levels of passenger comfort and ridability, that also minimises its adverse impact on the climate, air quality and noise levels.

MK PlusBus article in Bus and Coach Buyer

In the July 6th edition of Bus and Coach Buyer there is a three page article on Milton Keynes PlusBus and Taxicard, written by Richard Armitage.
RATC, with TAS Partnership, reviewed community transport in Milton Keynes in mid-2005. As a result, by June 2006 a new door-to-door service for older and disabled people, MK PlusBus, was launched. In May 2007, MK Taxicard commenced, using the latest smartcard technology. Big improvements in service quality and quantity have been achieved using the same budget, benefiting users and funders alike.

Cork City Council have asked Richard Armitage Transport Consultancy to explore the possibility of setting up a Car Sharing Club in the city. On Tuesday 6th March, Richard Armitage will make a presentation at University College Cork, followed by a debate and discussion, aimed at discovering if there is any interest for the idea from local people.
